| Who are we?
We are a Christian run organisation offering a counselling service to men and women of all ages. We are part of the Sycamore Tree Trust a local charity which has several areas of work locally
The Acorn Centre has been open since the end of January 1995. We offer various areas of work. These are:
- Work within all areas of pregnancy (full details below and on our leaflet that you download here)
- Counselling work with young people
- A limited general counselling service based within the centre
- We have also completed a commission to research the needs of lone teenage parents within Nuneaton and Bedworth for Warwickshire County Council.
We are not a medical centre and requests for medical help are referred to either local doctors or family planning clinics. We have a full policy document, which is available on request to read.
Training
We have a tiered training requirement within the centre:
- All our volunteers that carry out pregnancy tests will use counselling skills to work with these clients. All will have completed our in-house training course and in addition have a certificate in counselling skills.
- All other counsellors will either hold a Diploma in Counselling or be counsellors on placement within the agency.
Within the agency our counsellors and volunteers are encouraged to attend further training courses in both miscarriage and post-abortion work to be able to help in these areas.
All our training courses are run by our co-ordinator with trainers for specialist areas (contraception and adoption) are brought in.
It is a basic requirement that all volunteers and paid staff attend supervision consistent with BACP guidelines. Supervision is offered internally to all our volunteers and we also offer external supervision. Further details on request
We are committed to improving the standard of our services whether it is the structure of our organisation or care for our volunteers to recognised standards and to this end we are very proud to say we have achieved PQUASSO Level One and are now working towards Level Two.

As an agency we try to be involved with supporting multi agency approaches and as a result of this, we are part of the following initiatives:
- Teenage Pregnancy Groups (Warwickshire)
- Baby Loss support Group (George Eliot Hospital)
- Maternity Services Liason Committee (George Eliot Hospital)
Other Agencies
We actively seek to work with other agencies and have built up relationships with several. Clients are told about us by GP’s, Health Visitor’s, and Mental Health Units, and of course previous clients.
